The Paintings

Scriptures: “All you inhabitants of the world, and dwellers on earth, when a banner is raised on the mountains, look! when a shofar is blown, listen!" (Isaiah 18:3)

"With quaking and excitement, he swallows up the ground. He cannot stand still when the shofar sounds." (Job 39:24)

"Blow the shofar in Zion! Sound an alarm on My holy mountain! Let all living in the land tremble - for the day of Adonai is coming - surely it is near!" (Joel 2:1)

"He will send out His angels with a great shofar, and they will gather together His chosen from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” (Matthew 24:31)

"For the Lord Himself shall come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the blast of God’s shofar, and the dead in Messiah shall rise first." (1 Thessalonians 4:16)

Painting this picture was a surprising thrill, it felt like it already existed and that I just had to give tangible expression to it. I know that sounds a bit weird but that’s the way it felt to me.

To begin, I had nothing pre planned, just maybe a sense of heaven and earth.  I started with a large yellow diagonal shape across half of the canvas meeting midway with a matching blue diagonal shape opposite. It wasn’t long before it became clear to me that I was painting trumpets sounds coming down from heaven and shofar sounds responding from the earth.

Exciting! - I could almost feel the atmosphere alive with sound. To my great joy, I later realized that it was Rosh HaShana ! The actual day of the celebration of the Feast of Trumpets! How special is that!  It was thrilling to paint this picture with joy but at the same time also with a sense of the weightiness of heaven touching earth.
